Detoxifying by Bathing

Remember back to our series on channels of elimination in the body?  Well, if you recall, the skin is one of these.  The skin is actually our largest organ.  We can also absorb nutrients, chemicals, and other things through our skin.  Knowing this, it makes sense we could use bathing as a way to help our body detoxify.

Prior to bathing, dry skin brushing can help with the cell turnover rate in the skin and allow the body to more easily release toxins through the skin.

Using wet/dry saunas and exercising to help promote sweating also helps us detoxify through our skin.  Be sure to rinse immediately after.

However, our topic today is baths and detoxing.  We can take baths or do hand/foot soaks to help detoxify.

Before bathing or soaking, be sure to have the best water possible.  If you do not have a whole-house filter to remove impurities and chlorine from the water, consider using a bath filter or pure vitamin C powder and adding 1-4 tbsp to the bath water before getting in.


Here are a few simple recipes that can be used anytime to help the body detoxify in general.

  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Soak feet in 1 cup apple cider vinegar mixed with water or bathe in 1 quart apple cider vinegar mixed with water.
  • Epsom Salt, Bentonite Clay, and Yellow Dock: ½ cup Epsom salt, ½ cup bentonite clay, and 20 capsules of yellow dock in bath water


Looking for something a bit more targeted?  Try one of the following herbs for a more in-depth cleanse.

  • Mustard Powder: Helps improve circulation and can ease sore muscles
  • Ginger: Can help bacterial infections
  • Lavender: Helps soothe the body and relax the mind
  • Chamomile: Helps relax the body and mind
  • Basil: Energizing, stimulating, and refreshing
  • Eucalyptus: Can help clear congestion
  • Basil: Energizing, stimulating, and refreshing
  • Lemon Balm: Uplifting and refreshing.  It may help with SAD
  • Calendula: Soothing and healing for dry skin and even wounds
